PETER SHIRE HOME & STUDIO

The LA-based artist and Memphis Group alumnus, Peter Shire, was born and raised, and currently lives and works in Echo Park, Los Angeles. He lives in the house that he grew up in, which his dad, Henry Shire, built in 1949.

Peter Shire has created ceramics, furniture, toys, interior designs, and public sculptures; humor and playfulness extends throughout his work.

His personal style signifier is stripes, and he has said it all started while in art school, where he one day saw a striped t-shirt in a shop window and went back to buy it (and he still owns it to this day). Shire says stripes are about buoyancy and standing out, and that his style icon is Picasso.

Shire has stated that his favorite room in his house is the bathroom, because it is the overthrow of one’s puritanical impulses. If he were to build a house, the bathroom would be the centerpiece from which the rest of the design flowed.

He describes his interior style as slightly uncomfortable, hopefully dramatic and eliptical, and full of sex appeal.
