KIRKPATRICK HOUSE

  • George Nelson & Gordon Chadwick
  • 2104 Sheffield Dr, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49008

In February 1954, James Kirkpatrick wrote to his wife Sarah's college roommate's husband asking if he would accept a commission to design a home for his family in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The recipient was George Nelson, accomplished architect and head of George Nelson and Associates. Nelson accepted on February 15.

The Kirkpatrick House is remarkable in that it was designed during the height of Nelson's career. In 1954, he had recently coauthored four books and was serving as Design Director to Herman Miller, design consultant to General Electric and Howard Miller, chair of the Aspen design conference, and advisor to the University of Georgia's school of fine arts.

Working with his associate Gordon Chadwick, Nelson designed the house between 1954 and 1956, with construction completed in 1958. The four bedroom, 3,500 square foot home is located on a wooded 2.4 acre lot at the end of Sheffield Drive in southwest Kalamazoo. The rectangular, two story structure is clad in gray corrugated metal and painted wood, with floor-to-ceiling windows filling the spaces with natural light.

Nelson preferred to eliminate freestanding furniture and integrate storage systems into the structure through room dividers or built directly into walls. His Storage Wall concept was his answer to getting rid of unnecessary clutter that accumulated with postwar prosperity. They also devised an outlandish color scheme using 20 different colors and selecting up to four colors per room.

Nelson prototyped furniture through the building phase, using them as experiments for future furniture designs. The home was filled with Herman Miller furniture that Nelson designed or curated as the company's design director from 1947 until 1972.

In 2005, collector David Corner found the home and asked point blank to be called first if the owner was ever considering selling. A year later, he got the call. Corner spent almost a decade meticulously restoring the Kirkpatrick House, even down to Nelson's original color scheme. Musician Jack White of the White Stripes purchased the home sight unseen in 2016 for over the asking price of $450,000.

The Kirkpatrick House is the only known residence in Michigan designed by noted architect and designer George Nelson.
